Frances (Gray) Hamilton

May 19, 1938 - Dec. 3, 2015

SOUTH BEND - Mrs. Frances Hamilton, 77, of South Bend, IN, entered into eternal rest at 12:58 p.m. on Thursday, December 3, 2015, at Hospice House of St. Joseph County with her loving family by her side.
Frances was born on May 19, 1938, in South Bend, to the union of Hattie (Thomas) and Rev. General Gray, Sr.; they both preceded her in death.

She confessed her faith in Christ at an early age. She joined Progressive M.B. Church under the pastorship of the late Reverend Henry L. Giden, Sr. where she attended services faithfully until her health no longer permitted.

Mrs. Hamilton was educated in the South Bend Community School System and attended Oliver Grade School and Washington High School.

On September 21, 1956, in South Bend, as Frances Gray, she was united in holy matrimony to Richard Hamilton, Jr.; he preceded her in death on June 6, 1983.

Frances retired from Kmart after 32 years of service. Her post retirement employment included seven years at the South Bend Community School Corporation as a cook at Clay High School and a lunch attendant at the Park Summer Lunch program.

She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Shirley and Gloria Gray; three grandchildren, Charrise Gray, Cornelius Johnson and James Gray, all of South Bend; 10 grandchildren, four great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary “Kathy” Mitchell of Flint, MI; and two brothers, Melvin Gray, also of Flint, and Randy (and his wife, Queene) of Miami, FL; along with many other relatives.

Along with her parents and loving husband, Frances was also preceded in death by four brothers, Preston, Benjamin, General Jr. and Lincoln Gray; and five sisters, Sylvia Null, Bertha “Bootsie” Jenkins, Dorothy Jamison, Mildred Clay and Bobby Jean Gray.

Frances enjoyed reading the Bible, ordering trinkets and gadgets from Publisher's Clearing House, occasional trips to the Casino, and cooking. She was family-famous for her macaroni and cheese and her barbeque. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her family, especially her daughters.

Frances will be dearly missed by those who loved and knew her, especially her daughter, Shirley, who devoted untiring love and gentle care while taking care of her mother.

The service for Mrs. Hamilton is 11:00 a.m. Saturday, December 12, at Progressive M.B. Church, 1232 E. Bronson, with visitation one hour before the service. Committal will follow at Highland Cemetery. Friends are invited to leave messages of condolence at www.cobbfuneralhomes.com.
