JOSEPH "HANS" GRUNWALD


Jan. 2, 1937 - Dec. 7, 2013 SOUTH BEND - Joseph "Hans" Grunwald, 76, passed away at 10:40 am Saturday, December 7, 2013, in his residence. Joseph was born on January 2, 1937, in Budakovac, Yugoslavia, (now Croatia) to Julius and Helen (Mikula) Grunwald. He and his family were interred in a camp in Germany from 1943-1945. After WW II, the family relocated to Vienna, Austria, for 7 years. Then, in June 1952, immigrated to South Bend, IN, to live with Anton Grunwald Sr., the brother of Julius Grunwald.

Joseph attended Washington High School.

He was an avid fisherman winning multiple prizes. At one time he belonged to the Chain O' Lakes Conservation Club. Joseph served in the U.S. Army during 1958-1961. He was in the Intelligence Division as an interpreter speaking four languages. He retired from Delta Star Electronics in 2003 after 20 years of employment.

Hans was a member of the American Legion #357; Fisherman's Club, PNA #83; and the Army-Navy Club. On July 16, 1966, he married Ila Frediricks. She died on May 24, 2006. Surviving are a stepdaughter, Shirley Leeper of Middlebury, and her 2 children; sister, Mary Grunwald-Schaar of South Bend; niece and nephews, Michael Schaar, Helen Schaar-Corning, Joseph and Paula Schaar; and 24 grand and great-grand-nieces and nephews. A Memorial Service including the Liturgy of the Word will take place at 11:00 am Friday, December 13, 2013, in Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial of his cremated remains will take place at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery. Family and friends may call 1 hour prior to services in the church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Center for Hospice or Our Lady of Hungary Church.
