ANCHORAGE, AK -Chester Gale, 88, a lifelong South Bend residence, passed away at 3:39 a.m. on Wednesday, December 2, 2009. with his daughter by his side at the 3rd Medical Group, Elmendorf Air Force Base Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska. Chester was born on September 15, 1921, in South Bend, to Sadie and John Golembiewski. On December 29, 1950, in St. Patrick's Catholic Church in South Bend, Chester married the former June M. Cook, and together they raised six children.

Chester was preceded in death by his parents; sons, William Joseph Gale and Timothy Robert Gale; and close friend and brother-in-law, Ray Wasielewski.

Chester is survived by sister, Alice Wasielewski of Broomfield, CO; son and partner, John Gale and Kim Davis of Bellingham, WA; daughter and son-in-law, Bruce and Rebecca Roberts of Anchorage, AK; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Richelle Gale of South Bend; daughter, Jolinda Goodwin of Walkerton, IN; grandchildren, Ryan and Alyse Roberts of Anchorage, AK, Kelly Springman and Shawn Burback of Minneapolis, MN, David Goodwin of Palm Springs, CA, William Gale Jr. of South Bend, Joseph Gale of South Bend and Tammy Seravalli of Stewart, FL; numerous great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Chester graduated from Washington High School and later continued his education at College of Commerce in South Bend where he earned a degree in accounting. He also attended the University of Indiana-South Bend.

He appreciated the beauty of music and read voraciously, while also enjoying the game of golf, and crafting golf clubs in his spare time. Chester served his country honorably in World War II as a quartermaster second class in the U.S. Navy. In 1945 he returned to South Bend where he worked at the Studebaker Corporation as a metal finisher. He later joined the U.S. Postal Service as an accounting clerk where he retired in 1984 after 31 years of service.

For the last 10 years, Chester endured lung and heart disease with courage, grace and determination. He had a generous and beautiful spirit and will be remembered as a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle.

Visitation for Chester was held on Sunday, December 20, 2009, in Evergreen Memorial Chapel in Anchorage, Alaska. A funeral service will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, May 22, 2010, in ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, with visitation one hour prior in the funeral home on Saturday morning. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.
