Thomas L Haluda - Class Of 1963 VIEW PROFILE

Thomas L Haluda

Thomas L. Haluda, 76, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on July 13, 2021 after a short battle with melanoma. Tom was born on May 4, 1945 to Bronislaus “Bert” and Pearl (Kosik) Haluda. Shortly after graduating from Washington High School in 1963, Tom joined the U.S. Army, serving as a military police officer while stationed in Germany and France. After leaving the service, he married Carolyn M. Wojciechowski on November 9, 1968.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bert (1958) and Pearl (2013) and his older brother John (1999). Tom is survived by his wife, Carolyn Haluda; daughters Tracie (Bryan) Bedell, Jennifer Haluda, and Wendy Haluda; grandchildren MK and Calvin Bedell; granddog Hope the Wonder Dog; his younger brother, David Haluda; sister-in-law Jean Haluda; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

A prolific bullshitter, Tom originally wanted to be a high school history teacher. Instead, he took a different path, working as a firefighter with the South Bend Fire Department; as a custodian with the South Bend Clinic; and as an engineer and custodian with the South Bend Community School Corporation. His favorite part of the school year was when he dressed up as Santa and clambered up onto the school’s roof to wave to kids as they were leaving for winter break. He was happiest when bartending events at St. Adalbert Parish Hall, which gave him new chances to perfect his schtick. Tom also enjoyed trips to the casino, oysters, and college football Saturdays.

Tom was a member of St. Matthew Cathedral and its Rosary Society, and a dedicated volunteer with the St. Vincent de Paul Society.

Visitation will take place from 10 a.m. – 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, 2021, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 a.m. in St. Matthew Cathedral, 1701 Miami St., South Bend, IN 46613.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to consider donating to the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Joseph County, 520 Crescent Avenue, South Bend, IN 46617.

Kaniewski Funeral Home, South Bend, IN is handling arrangements.  To send online condolences, please visit www.kaniewski.com.
