SYLVESTER J. "SAL" GACZKOWSKI

MARCELLUS - Sylvester J. "Sal" Gaczkowski, 83, of Marcellus, passed away on August 28, 2007, at 7:15 p.m. in Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo, MI. Sylvester was born on January 23, 1924, to the late Michael and Mary (Jaknbowska) Gaczkowski. He was also preceded in death by his two sisters, Annette Harreld and Vicki Kopec; and by his brother, Tony Gaczkowski.

On February 2, 1946, he married Lenamae Delores Smith in St. Adalbert Catholic Church. She survives along with their children, Susan L. Gaczkowski of South Bend and Michael J. Gaczkowski of Orange County, CA; five grandchildren, Gina, Joe, Stephanie, Robert and Roberta; and four great-grandchildren, Nicholas, AJ, Jacob and Johnathan.

After graduating from Washington High School, he enlisted into the United States Air Force in November 1941. He served in World War II and was honorably discharged in November 1948.

Sal retired as a letter carrier for the U.S. Postal Service after 24 years of service in January 1979. He had lived most of his life in South Bend, and then after retirement he permanently moved to Marcellus, MI, in 1989.

A memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 6, 2007, in St. Joseph Funeral Home, 824 S. Mayflower Road, South Bend, IN, with calling one hour prior to the services. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery. For those who are unable to attend the funeral liturgy, condolences for the family may be sent to www.sjfh.net.
