SHIRLEY A. (RZESZEWSKI) DOUGHERTY

Dougherty, Shirley Ann (née Rzeszewski) January 13, 1936 - September 26, 2013; 77, of Merrillville, formerly of South Bend, passed away Thursday, following a brief illness. She was born in Chicago, IL, then spent her childhood in South Bend.

Shirley attended St. Adalbert's School and graduated from Washington High School in 1952.

She married her husband John "Jack" Dougherty in 1953 and started a family. Shirley retired from Indiana University Northwest in 1993 with 27 years of service in various roles in the School of Business, Career and Placement, and the EEOC office. She was a member of St. Hedwig Parish and past president of St. Hedwig's Golden Cluster.

Shirley is preceded in death by her parents, Leo and Irene Rzeszewski, and husband, Jack Dougherty, with whom she was married 55 years. Surviving family includes: daughter Michele (Paul) Holley of Merrillville; Patrick (Pam) of Portage; John, Jr. (Debbie) of Camby; Terence (Melissa) of Portage; Brian (Rachel) of Albany, GA; 13 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren; brother Howard Rzeszewski of Indianapolis; and sister Lorraine Ohlman of Fishers.

Friends may visit with Shirley's family Thursday, October 3, from 11a.m.-12p.m. at St. Hedwig Parish, 331 S. Scott St., South Bend. Memorial service will be held following visitation at 12p.m. in the church. Kaniewski Funeral Home of South Bend is handling arrangements.
