JACK R. DISLER

FORT WAYNE - Jack Ray Disler passed away Monday, Feb. 11, 2013, at Emeritus in Fort Wayne. He was born in Fort Wayne Dec. 14, 1932. He graduated from South Side HS in 1951. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the Navy on the USS Kimberly from 1951-1953. He graduated from Indiana University and also earned his Master's Degree from Purdue.

He became a teacher and basketball coach at several high schools in South Bend for 37 years; most recently he spent the last 8 years at Washington High School coaching the girls basketball team. Jack also coached track and field, but his love was coaching basketball. He went to every high school finals game in Indianapolis for 50 years.

Jack enjoyed playing tennis and traveling with his wife. He was an avid Notre Dame fan, serving as an usher for the football team for 29 years, and attending their basketball games for both men and women.

Surviving are his wife, LaVelle Essex Disler; daughter, Kay Ellen McDaniel of Green Bay, WI; son, Blaine Branch Disler of Paducah, KY; stepdaughters, Pamela (Charles) Gates of Crown Point, Diana Essex of Antioch, CA, Glenna Essex of Fort Wayne; stepson, Donald Essex of Fort Wayne; brother, Harold (Joyce) Disler of Seffner FL; sisters, Mary Lou (Charlie) Schoeph of Fort Wayne, Marcia (Stuart) Schwalin of Hurricane WVa, Bonnie Schrock of Fishers; 5 grandchildren & 9 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ray & Mary Disler, infant daughter, Jill, and son, Scott Disler.

A memorial service will be 3 pm Friday, Feb. 15, 2013, at D.O. McComb and Sons Lakeside Park Funeral Home, 1140 Lake Ave., with calling from 1 pm until the service. Memorials may be made to Heartland Hospice or the Alzheimer's Association.
