SOUTH BEND - Earl A. Dhoore, 86, of South Bend, passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2009, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, South Bend. He was born on December 20, 1922, in South Bend, to the late Morris and Mary (Dhaene) Dhoore, and was a lifelong area resident. On October 31, 1942, he married Shirley Listek, who survives. Along with his loving wife of 66 years, he is survived by his daughters, Colleen Holmes of VA, Judith Dhoore-Poelvoorde of Mishawaka and Janice (Mark) Sowers of TN; his son, Gregory (Gail) Dhoore of South Bend; seven grandchildren, Daryl Zernick of TX, Aaron Poelvoorde of FL, Matthew Dhoore of Granger, IN, Adrienne Fraaza of MI, Adam Poelvoorde and Kerri Dhoore, both of South Bend, Timothy Danov of MI; and three great-grandchildren, Blake Davis of South Bend, Madelynn Fraaza of MI and Brayden Dhoore of Granger.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Dhoore, and two brothers, Theodore and Julius Dhoore.

Mr. Dhoore retired as a sergeant from the South Bend Police Department in 1968. He had also been employed by South Bend Sash and Door. He was United States Navy veteran of WWII, a parishioner of Christ the King Catholic Church, and a member of FOP Lodge #38.

He was a 1941 graduate of Washington High School, where he was a member of multiple state championship football teams.

Earl was an avid Notre Dame football fan, enjoyed vegetable gardening, and was a wonderful craftsman, especially woodworking for his grandkids. Earl enjoyed spending time at his home on Diamond Lake where he and Shirley lived for over 14 years. One of his favorite hobbies at the lake was fishing, especially ice fishing.

There will be no visitation. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 AM Friday, May 15th, in Christ the King Catholic Church, with interment to follow at Highland Cemetery, South Bend. Kaniewski Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association, Chicago Office, 30 North Michigan Avenue, Suite 2015, Chicago, IL 60602; or to the American Heart/Stroke Association, Greater Midwest Affiliate, Memorials and Tributes Lockbox, 3816 Paysphere Circle, Chicago, IL 60674.
