MILDRED R. (SANDERS) CURRIE

MILDRED RUTH (SANDERS) CURRIE Gary, Indiana Age 77, passed away Monday, December 3, 2007, at her home in Gary. She was born on September 2, 1930, in South Bend, IN, a daughter of the late Arthur E. and Emma B. (Callaway) Sanders.

Mildred was a graduate of South Bend Washington High School.

She then went on to study teaching, with an emphasis in artistic drawing, at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. It was during her collegiate years at Indiana University where she met the love of her life, her late husband, Clarence R. Currie of Gary. She was a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (Tau Chapter), where she held many offices, including Sorority President (Basileus). Mildred was a long-time employee of the Gary Community School Corporation, encouraging various students across the city of Gary to explore their artistic talents. Mildred attended St. John's Lutheran Church in Gary, and she had a passionate interest in choral singing and bowling. She was an enthusiastic member of the Gary Civic Chorale and the Gary Community School Corporation Bowling League.

She is survived by her two children, Stephen (fiancee' Angela Edmond) and Alan of Gary; 2 sisters, Agnes Stevens of Chicago, IL and Evelyn Baugh of South Bend, IN; 3 sisters-in-law, Henrietta Sanders of South Bend, IN, Lorraine Nichols of Gary, and Iris Currie of Detroit, MI; many extremely close friends including Ray Scott and Marva Hicks of Gary, and Doris (George) Haley of Silver Spring, MD, among others, and her many nieces, nephews, and other cherished loved ones.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and 3 brothers, Arthur, Joseph, and John.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Saturday, December 8. 2007, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Gary immediately followed by Funeral Services at 11:00 a.m. with Pastor Bryan Reeves officiating. The Interment service will be held at Evergreen Cemetery, Hobart, IN. Professional services rendered by Guy & Allen Funeral Directors, Inc.
