SOUTH BEND - Helyn Renee Cathey, 50, residing in South Bend, passed away at 5:30 pm Thursday, October 13, 2011 in Hospice House of South Bend. Helyn was born in South Bend on March 28, 1961 to the late Isaiah and Thelma (Maddox) Cathey, and remained a lifelong area resident.

Helyn is survived by one daughter, Nellie R. Cathey-Hunt of South Bend; two sons, Darnell I. (Sara Marie) Cathey Hunt of South Bend, Shawnshea White of South Bend; two grandchildren, Aziah Hunt and Cameron Tierney; one sister, Nell M. Cathey of Mishawaka; two brothers, Maurice M. Cathey of Louisville, KY and Ernest R. Cathey of Lexington, TN. Four nieces, Thelma Hoskin, Curis Hamilton, and Lashonda and April Wright all of South Bend.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Edward L. Jones; her mother, Thelma L. (Maddox) Cathey; her father, Rev. Isaiah Cathey Jr., and Charles D. Wright.

Helyn attended Washington High School and Davenport University. She was a caregiver, working at Cardinal Nursing Home and with home health care. She also loved taking care of children. She was a quiet, gentle person, who was family oriented and well loved by everyone. Helyn was a devout Christian, who enjoyed reading her bible. She was a longtime member of Jesus is the Rock Church in South Bend. Funeral services for Helyn will be 3:00 pm, Saturday, October 22, 2011 in Palmer Funeral Home - Hickey Chapel, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46635, with Pastor Graylin Watson officiating. Burial will be held at a later date in Highland Cemetery. Friends may visit with the family from 2:00 - 3:00 pm Saturday in the funeral home prior to services.
