SOUTH BEND - Grace (Jenkins) Broadway

The Heavenly Father dispatched his angels on Thursday, December 17, to guide his beloved Grace (Jenkins) Broadway home.

Grace was born on May 10, 1941 in Cleveland, Mississippi, to the late Henry and Gracie Mae (Reid) Jenkins. She relocated, with her family to South Bend, Indiana from Mississippi in 1953.

Mrs. Broadway was a graduate of South Bend's Washington High School, where she met her husband, the late Richard Edwin Broadway, whom she married on Oct. 3, 1962. To this union were born six children.

Grace was a longtime member of Laymen Chapel C.M.E. Church, where she served on the usher board.

As a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, she guided, supported and cared for her family. Her smile and loving spirit could brighten and warm any room. She never met a stranger and could strike up a lively conversation with anyone she came into contact with. Her home was always a welcoming place, where family and friends often gathered to enjoy her cooking and warm hospitality. Her compassion and her concern for others were her essence.

(Darryl) Parker; a brother, Tommy Floyd (Della Ann); 13 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Toye (Gary) Simmons; two brothers-in-law, Stanford and Knowel (Brenda); a host of nieces and nephews, and many special friends.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by three brothers, Henry Jr., Willie Charles, and Carl; and her mother-in-law, Emma Broadway Duhaney, and fathers-in-law, Howard Broadway and Carol O. Duhaney.

A celebration of her life will be at 1 p.m., Wednesday, December 23, at Laymen Chapel C.M.E. Church, 303 S. Kenmore St., South Bend. Visitation, including a time of reflection, is at noon at the church.
