In Memory
Terrance Tyrone Lewis
August 8, 1961 ~ May 21, 2024 (age 62)
Mr. Terrance Tyrone Lewis, 62, affectionately known as Terry, departed this life on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 in St. Joseph Reginal Medical Center, Mishawaka, Indiana, following a battle with prostate and bone cancers. He was born on August 8, 1961 to Delores Brown and Prentis L.Lewis.
Terry was a lifetime resident of South Bend and attended the former Franklin School (SES) prior to the family moving to the West end of town. After the move, he attended Navarre Middle School and graduated from Washington High School in 1979. Terry worked several general labor positions in South Bend and the surrounding area with the most recent employer being the University of Notre Dame 2019-2021.
Terry had a genuine love for sports, especially basketball. In his younger years he played on the recreational league coached by the late Charles Black, Sr. at the LaSalle Center; currently known as the Charles Black Center. Terry enjoyed attending the high school basketball games and was a fan of the Washington Panthers. He followed the various athletic teams of his alma mater and watched them as they advanced to tournament levels. He was also a devoted fan of the Golden State Warriors and the Splash Brothers. Terry’s expertise and knowledge of music was like none other. He was always up for the challenge of his version of “name that tune and/or artist.” He had that same love for detailing cars. He was the best—professionally and for pleasure.
Terry had a great love for his family and friends. He was a fun loving man whose presence filled every room he entered. Terry was a talker and had a special made up phrase or story about every topic in his discussion. He rarely missed a function and made it a point to have a good time and enjoy himself.
Terry leaves to cherish his loving memory, one son, Maurice Lewis and one daughter Shardae Word (and her significant other, Shelton) all of South Bend; 4 grandchildren; his mother, Delores Brown Peterson of Erie, Pennsylvania; four sisters, Nicole (Kirk) Paskell both also of Erie; Kim Peterson, Cassandra Lewis and Terriel (Robert) Lewis all of South Bend; three brothers, Anthony (Mandy) Peterson II, Daryl (Jeromy) Lewis and Jovan (Barbara) Lewis also all of South Bend; a bonus son Andrew (Ashley) Smith and a bonus daughter, LaTosha Chambliss; 8 bonus grandchildren; a grand-dog, Bentley along with a host of other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his father, Anthony Peterson I; birth father and stepmother, Pastor Prentis and Sharon Lewis; grandparents, Willie T. and Mary Alberta Spann Brown; a brother, Michael Jay Johnson and a son-in-love Tolies Word Terry had a deep love and commitment for family. He was a kind person, quick to express words of encouragement. His advice to his family and friends is to get checked out; don’t let cancer beat you when there’s a chance you can beat it. His absence will be felt immensely by those who loved and knew him well.
