Ramon "Coach Ray" Garza Sr.

Ramon “Coach Ray” Garza Sr., 59, of South Bend, Indiana, passed away at 12:37am on Monday, April 6, 2026, in Raclin House.

Ramon was born on September 3, 1966, in South Bend, Indiana, to Ernesto V. Garza Jr. and Carmen (Hernandez) Garza. He spent his life in the community he loved and was known for his strong work ethic, generous spirit, and deep love for family and friends.

He worked as a delivery driver for SB Chocolate Factory and took great pride in his work. Outside of his profession, Ramon was a man of many passions. Affectionately known as “Coach Ray,” he dedicated over 30 years to coaching youth sports, including football, baseball, and basketball for both boys and girls. His commitment to mentoring young people earned him recognition as “Head Coach of the Year,” and he left a lasting impact on countless lives.

Ramon also had a love for music and worked as a sound engineer for Los Hermanos Buenos. He enjoyed cheering on his favorite teams, including the Chicago Cubs, Notre Dame, and the Dallas Cowboys.

He is survived by his children: Ramon (Paloma) Garza Jr., Anthony Garza, Rogelio (Rossy) Olivarez, Vanessa Olivarez, and Angelica Olivarez. He was a proud grandfather to nine grandchildren. Ramon is also survived by his siblings: Rosa Garza, Ninfa Garza, Delia (Jaime) Ortiz, Alisia Garza, and Rodolfo “Rudy” Garza; sister-in-law, Martha Garza; as well as many extended family members and dear friends. 

He was preceded in death by his mother, Carmen Garza; and brothers, Ernesto Garza III and Jose Garza. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to DaVida Dialysis Center West, and to Mike and Jesusa Bueno and family, and all who supported Ramon with love and care during his sickness.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday, April 9, 2026, in Palmer Funeral Home – West Chapel 2702 Lincolnway West South Bend, IN 46619 with a Rosary service at 7:00 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 AM on Friday, April 10, 2026, at St. Casimir Catholic Church, 1308 W. Dunham Street, South Bend, IN 46619. Burial will be at St. Joseph Cemetery at a later date.

Ramon will be remembered for his big heart, his dedication to his community, and the countless lives he touched as a coach, father, grandfather, and friend. His legacy of love and service will live on in all who knew him. Condolences for the family may be made at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
