Stephanie Caldwell Obituary
The Story of Stephanie
Stephanie Caldwell was born on March 27, 1966, in South Bend, Indiana, to John D. Caldwell and Dorris Caldwell. A lifelong resident of South Bend, Stephanie built a life centered around faith, family, love, laughter, and giving to others. On September 25, 2026, at the age of 60, she peacefully transitioned from this life at the home of her daughter, surrounded by love, following a brief illness. Though her time with us feels far too short, the love Stephanie gave during those sixty years was immeasurable.
Stephanie accepted Christ at an early age and was a devoted member of Layman Chapel C.M.E. Church. Her faith was an important part of her life. She served faithfully on the Praise Team, sang in the Choir, and served in God’s Grace Food Pantry until declining health made regular attendance more difficult. Even then, the faith and love she carried within her remained a part of who she was.
Stephanie attended Harrison Elementary and Washington High School, graduating in 1984. Following high school, she pursued her passion for hair and beauty by enrolling at Pivot Point School of Cosmetology in Illinois, where she earned her Barber and Cosmetology License. Her talents and love for helping others extended well beyond cosmetology. Throughout her working years, she also served as a paraprofessional for the South Bend Community School Corporation at Harrison, Marquette, and Studebaker. She later gave her time as a volunteer tutor at the Charles Martin Youth Center, another reflection of her desire to encourage, guide, and pour into the lives of others.
But of all the roles Stephanie held throughout her life, none meant more to her than being a mother and grandmother. She was the proud and loving mother of three children: twins Breanna and Breion, and her youngest son, Marcus. Her children knew her not only as their mother, but as one of their greatest sources of encouragement and strength. Yet Stephaine also understood that strength meant little without love.
She had a beautiful smile, a wonderful sense of humor, and a way of bringing laughter and warmth wherever she went. She was sweet, intelligent, encouraging, generous, and giving—sometimes giving simply because she saw that someone needed something. Her love was never limited to the people who shared her last name. Over the years, many of her children’s friends came to know Stephanie as a mother figure of their own. Her home, her heart, her advice, and her love had room for more than just her own children.
And then came the role that brought her another special kind of joy: Grandmother. Stephanie adored her four grandchildren, Mar’Kye Hill, Timothy Chester III, Mia Hill, and Bre’Ella Hill. She wasn’t simply their grandmother; she was an active and loving presence in their lives. She spent countless hours helping care for them, taking them places, creating memories, encouraging them, laughing with them, and—true to who she was—loving and doting on them every opportunity she had. Her grandchildren had the blessing of experiencing the same unconditional love she had given her own children.
Stephanie leaves to cherish her memory her three children, Breanna Hill, Breion Hill, and Marcus Hill; her four beloved grandchildren, Mar’Kye Hill, Timothy Chester III, Mia Hill, and Bre’Ella Hill; her mother, Dorris Caldwell; her sisters, Debra (Earl) Walker and Francine Campbell; her nephew, Travis Harris; her great-nieces, Teagan Harris and Shiloh Harris; and Aniyah Williams. She also leaves her dear aunt, Beverly Smith; her uncle, Kenny Roberson; and a host of relatives, extended family members, friends, and countless others whose lives were made better simply because Stephanie was a part of them. She was preceded in death by her beloved father, John D. Caldwell, and her brother-in-law, Earl Campbell.
Those who loved Stephanie will miss so many things: her smile, her laughter, her humor, her encouragement, her generosity, her advice, and simply knowing she was there. But the greatest part of her legacy cannot be measured by dates, accomplishments, or titles. Her legacy is the love she left inside the people who knew her. It lives in her children. It lives in her grandchildren. It lives in the friends who were welcomed and loved like family. It lives in every person she encouraged, every person she helped, and every heart she touched along the way.
Her physical presence will be deeply missed, but the love she gave so freely will never leave us. It will continue through her children, her grandchildren, and generations yet to come. Stephanie’s story does not end here. Her love simply becomes part of ours to carry forward.
“So also you have sorrow now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy from you.”— John 16:22
