Alonzo P. Adams Sr.

SOUTH BEND - Alonzo P. Adams Sr., 49, departed this life on Sunday, September 22, 2013. He was born to the union of Lance Adams II and Edna (Smith) Gray on January 19, 1964, in South Bend, Indiana, where he had resided all of his life. He attended Washington High School and graduated in 1982.

He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends and barbequing. He was a member of the Omega Psi Phi Fraternity INC. and the local UAW 5.

On September 13, 1986, he married his college sweetheart, Adrian L. (Cabell), and to this union Alonzo P. Adams Jr. and Alexis D. Adams were born; he is also survived by his daughter, Brooke (Aaron) Marsh, son, Darius S. Garner, and daughter, Alexandria I. Garner.

He was employed by the City of South Bend for 18 years and then he moved to AM General Military Assembly Plant, where he was currently employed for 11 years. He rededicated his life back to Christ in 1990 at Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, where he was active in the Brotherhood, Deacon Board, Sunday School, Usher Board, Drill Team, and the GSJ players.

Alonzo leaves behind his two sisters, Zena Adams of Fort Worth, Texas, and Donzella (Johnny) Williams of Bellevue, Michigan; six brothers, Armando Swanson, Elder Hernando (Debra) Swanson, Glen (Esemae) Brown and Tommy Jones, all of South Bend, Indiana, Rev. Clyde (Saundra) Austin of New York, Lance (Jolanda) Adams III of Huntley, Illinois; and one stepbrother, Michael (Marilyn) Love of South Bend; his grandchildren, Napoleon (Groves) Marsh, Jessiah Marsh and Trinity Grace Marsh; a special niece, Ciara Adams; and nephew, William Justice Adams-Jones.

He was preceded in death by his baby daughter, Ashley Nicole Adams; both his paternal and maternal grandparents; his father, Lance Adams II; and his mother, Edna (Smith) Gray; his brothers, Orlando Diaz Swanson and William J. "Bill" Adams.

Services for Alonzo P. Adams Sr. will be held on Friday, September 27, 2013, in Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, 101 N. Adams St., South Bend. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m. and service at 12 noon. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery, South Bend. Clark-O'Neal Funeral Home has been entrusted with arrangements.
