John Henry Polonka

John Polonka, 87, passed away on Sunday, May 29, 2022 in Briar Cliff Nursing Home.

John was born October 23, 1934 in South Bend to the late Fred and Hattie (Trudzinski) Polonka. He lost his daughter, Cynthia Sue Polonka in 1976 due to a tragic auto accident. On January 21, 1956, John married the love of his life, Mary Ann (Wasowski) Polonka. She survives along with their son, Michael (Julie) Polonka and daughter, Victoria Greenwell; grandchildren, Jake Greenwell, Chris (Kathy) Polonka, and Daniel Polonka; step-grandchildren, Jenny Huntman and Jake (Rachel) Huntman; and great-grandchildren, Everett & Ellie Polonka.

John proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He worked for the South Bend Parks Department for 40 years. John was a member of the VFW Post 9820, American Legion Post 357, ZB Falcons, and Bowlers Country Club. He was a parishioner at St. Adalbert Catholic Church and a member of the St. Casimir Married Men’s Club. John loved to golf and enjoyed gardening. Everyone who met John loved him. He and his wife, Mary Ann, had a very healthy social life. John will be greatly missed.

Private services are being held. John will be buried in St. Joseph Cemetery. St. Joseph Funeral Home is assisting the family. Condolences for the family may be made at www.sjfh.net.
