Richard DeVere Mantei

EDWARDSBURG, Mich. -- Richard DeVere Mantei, 77, of Brady Road, died at 12:43 a.m. Monday (Jan. 22, 2007) at home. He was born May 5, 1929, in Flint, Mich., to Richard and Elsa (Rhode) Mantei. On Oct. 15, 1977, in South Bend, Ind., he married Bernadine Jarvis.

She survives, along with three sons, Michael and Randy Mantei, both of South Bend, and Kevin (Darlene) Mantei of Stanger, Texas; four stepdaughters, Karen (Don) Rush of Indianapolis and Angie (Albert) Simeri, Susan (Michael) Freshour and Mary Corl, all of Elkhart, Ind.; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Patricia (Charles) Stewart and Ruth (Charles) Jeske, both of South Bend, and Linda (Michael) Kuruzar of Wyocena, Wis.

Friends may call one hour prior to the 11 a.m. Wednesday funeral service at Our Lady of the Lake Catholic Church. The Rev. Joe McCormick, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in Adamsville Cemetery, Edwardsburg. Paul E. Mayhew Funeral Home, 26863 W. Main St., Edwardsburg, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Mantei had lived in the Michiana area all of his life. He was employed as a tool annd die maker, plastic division, at CTS in Elkhart, before retiring. He served in the U.S. Navy aboard the Willis A. Lee, was an avid bowler and enjoyed making wood replicas of ships.

Memorials may be given to the American Diabetes Association or to a charity of the donor's choice.
