Gustave Kohler

Gustave J. Kohler Jr.

SOUTH BEND - Gustave J. Kohler Jr., 81, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 2:11 a.m. Monday, February 6, 2012, in Memorial Hospital, South Bend. He was born on July 21, 1930, in South Bend, IN, to Gustave J. and Gertrude (Diroll) Kohler Sr. On November 4, 1950, in South Bend, IN, he married Shirley Mae (Houk) Kohler, who preceded him in death on November 21, 2004, after 54 years of marriage.

Mr. Kohler is survived by a daughter, Nancy (Pastor Stan) Dudka, and their children, Nicole and Bryce; three sons, Chris (Janine) Kohler and their children, Matthew and Rachel (Cody) Schroeder, and their daughter, Lily Schroeder; Guy (Cindy) Kohler and their daughter, Kirbea; and Jeffrey (Virginia) Kohler and their children, Shane, Jordan, Ryan, Alex and Jocelyn, who all reside in South Bend, IN; two sisters, Gertrude Gergacz of Mishawaka, IN, and Elsa Kohler of Mishawaka, IN.

Mr. Kohler was a lifelong resident until retirement when his winters were spent in Florida and his summers spent in Warsaw. He came back to live in South Bend for the winter after the passing of his wife in 2004. Gus is remembered as a wonderful husband, father, grandpa and brother. He was known to many as "Good Ole Gus." He was a skilled carpenter, building his own home in 1958 and many other carpentry projects through the years. Gus was a salesman/driver for Pepsi Cola for 38 years. He was a member of a Local Teamsters Union, The German Club and The Eagles Club. He enjoyed fishing, golfing, bowling, playing cards and horseshoes (always the champion at family reunions!). In the summer, fishing was a daily activity. He caught them, filleted them, froze them, and then gave them away for many to enjoy. Gus loved people, visiting and helping out wherever needed. Known for his integrity, humor and kindness, if you knew Gus, your world was a better place because he was a part of it. He will be greatly missed, but comfort comes with knowing he is with "Shug" once again and our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.
