Richard E. Benninghoff

SOUTH BEND — Richard E "Beemy" Benninghoff, 68, of Burbank Avenue, South Bend, Ind., died after a brief illness at 10:45 p.m on Friday. June 12, in his residence Mr. Benninghoff retired as a fire-fighter in 1979 from the South Bend Fire Department after 24 years of service He also retired as a Service Department Manager in 1995 from the Coca Cola Bottling Company after 39 years of employment. He was born to George and Adeline (DeMaki) Benninghoff on May 31, 1930, in South Bend, and was a lifelong resident.

On Sept. 2, 1950, in St. Adalbert's Catholic Church, he married the former Alice M. Skandis, who survives. He is also survived by one daughter, Patty A. (Greg) Wozniak of South Bend; one son, Randy R. (Paula) Benninghoff of South Bend: four loving grandchildren, Richie Benninghoff, Amanda, Brian and Brad Wozniak, all of South Bend, one sister, Loraine (Paul) Markward of Stevensville, Mich.; and by one niece, Pam Schultz of Stevensville. 

Mr. Benninghoff belonged to the Indiana Firefighter's Association, Moose Lodge 58, South Bend Alumni Association and Holy Family Parish. He was a 1948 graduate of Washington High School, "Daddy's loving smile and personality was quite impressionable. It seemed that everyone that knew Dad, loved him. He was the most well-liked person we have ever known. Dad enjoyed family time, fishing, and bowling. We love you and miss you Daddy."

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday in Holy Family Catholic Church with Rev. Paul Butler officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Polish Roman Catholic Cemetery. Friends may call from 2 to 8 p.m. today in Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, South Bend, where a parish Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of St. Joseph County, Inc., 111 Sunnybrook Court, South Bend, IN 46637-3437 or to the Holy Family Building Fund, 56405 Mayflower Road, South Bend, IN 46619.
