Leonard J Sobecki

December 17, 1953 - July 1, 2022

South Bend - Leonard J. Sobecki, 68, passed away peacefully at his home on July 1, 2022 after a short battle with cancer. Lenny was born on December 17, 1953 to Benedict and Valentina (Trzybinski) Sobecki in South Bend. Lenny was preceded in death by his father, Ben and his brother-in-law, Mike Glenn. Lenny is survived by his mother, Val and his six sisters, Kathleen Sobecki, Rita Glenn, Diane (Dave) Wood, Theresa (Randy) Glenn, Janine (Rodney) Avery, and Michele (Jeff) Wells. He is also survived by his nieces and nephews, Jason (Mackenzie) Glenn, Josh (Melissa) Glenn, Matt Wood, Sarah (Dan) Nowicki, Ashley (Brandon Ryan) Wood, Chris (Alison) Glenn, Jeremy (Courtney) Glenn, Tony (Heather) Glenn, Amanda Dudzinski, Nicole (Jonathan Schultz) Dudzinski, Brooke Dudzinski, Lauren Avery, Caitlin Relias, Blaise Relias, Morgan Relias, and Anna Wells plus numerous great nieces and nephews.

Lenny was a lifelong parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church where he proudly served as an alter boy and sang in the church choir. He was also a member of the St. Casimir’s Senior Citizens Group, St. Stan’s Harvest House, and the St. Hedwig’s Golden Cluster.

Growing up on the West side of South Bend he played Little League at Morris Mathys Park. He attended Holy Family Grade School and graduated from Washington High School in 1972. He was a member of the Washington Glee Club, Human Relations, Junior Achievement, Kiwanis, the Russian Club, the Wrestling Team, and on the 1972 State Football Championship Team.

Lenny loved to play cards. He especially liked taking money from family at our “family-friendly” poker games. He and his mom played Euchre with friends at Howard Park. He was the KING of solitaire. He loved playing UNO with his nieces and nephews and stacking the deck in his favor.

Lenny was an avid bowler until his illness in 1978. He continued to be a fixture at Beacon Bowl and Chippewa Lanes where he loved to brag on his family to the other bowlers.

Lenny spent a lot of time at Top Notch Restaurant on the corner of Mayflower and Western where he would pass the time with countless friends.

Lenny was a joker and trickster. He often tried to sell us expired raffle tickets and ask if you wanted to bet on a game that already happened.

He had many “Lenny-isms”. Like: “yeeeaahhh”, “here is a-nother, just like the other”, “boom chuck-a-luck-a”, “does mom have anything for me to do today” and of course, “like I said, you’re just grateful for what you got”.

Lenny loved taking care of his nieces and nephews, playing taxi, and sharing his orange TIC-TACS, attending their sporting events and bragging on their accomplishments.
He enjoyed clipping coupons and watching game shows. He was a White Sox fan, but still watched the Cubs if his sisters were over.

Above all else, Lenny was devoted to his family and friends. Especially Marty and Tom. He was loyal to us all.

The family would like to express our greatest gratitude to the Center for Hospice Care, especially Ron, Nicole, Angie, Erica, and all the other angels that eased Lenny’s pain and our family’s. Donations in Leonard’s memory can be made to: Center for Hospice Care, Mishawaka Campus, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN 46545.

"See you later alligator..."
