Shirley Faye (McCoy) Roe
December 20, 1949 ~ September 28, 2025 (age 75)
Shirley Faye Roe was a light in every room she entered, a woman whose warmth, laughter, and spunky spirit touched everyone she met. Born on December 20, 1949, in Dekalb, Mississippi, to John Thomas McCoy and Ida Mae McCoy (Fox), Shirley carried the strength of her family and the grace of her faith throughout her life.
A trailblazer from the start, Shirley made history as the first Black homecoming queen at Washington High School. She later worked for the city of South Bend before marrying the love of her life Dr Emmett Roe and devoting her life to being a mother, homemaker, and cherished friend. Her home was always open, her heart always generous, and her prayers always steadfast. She loved her entire family more than anything but she also enjoyed sports, had a sharp wit and a joyful sense of humor, was always there for her family and friends to listen and talk and never missed an episode of Judge Judy or Naked and Afraid.
Shirley’s faith guided her as Elder of her church at the Kingdom Christian Center in South Bend, where she served as a prayer warrior and mother to all. Her laughter, her stories, and her unwavering support created ripples of love that will be felt for generations.
She leaves behind her children; Denise Roe Jones, Joseph Roe, Sarah Roe, and Hannah Roe, her grandchildren; Jordan (Leah) Roe, Jaden Roe, Tavon Roe, and Braxton Roe, her siblings; John A. McCoy, Leona McCoy, and Jimmie McCoy.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband, Emmett Burl Roe; her daughter, Naomi Roe; and her siblings, Johnnie Mae Lee and Dee T. McCoy.
Proverbs 31:31 reflects Shirley’s life beautifully: “Honor her for all that her hands have done and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.” She lived these words daily — with humor, courage, and a heart wide open. Shirley's visitation will take place at Faith Alive Ministries, 909 North Bendix Drive, South Bend, Indiana, 46628, on Monday, October 6, 2025, at 11:00amEDT. A Celebration of Life will follow at 12:00pmEDT at the same venue.
