John F. FitzHenry
May 18, 1922 - Apr. 16, 1990

South Bend -- John F. FitzHenry, 67, of 1031 N. Niles Ave. , who was vocal music coordinator for the South Bend Community School Corp. for 15 years, died about 11:30 a.m. Monday at Memorial Hospital.

Mr. FitzHenry retired in 1983, after 31 years in the system's music department. Before becoming vocal music coordinator in 1966, he taught music at Central and Washington High schools and returned to teaching in 1981 until his retirement.

Mr. FitzHenry was born May 18, 1922, in Scranton, Pa., and lived in South Bend since 1952, coming from Michigan City.

On Dec. 1, 1951, at the University of Notre Dame, he married Betty Bell. She survives with three daughters, Rosemary Zirille of Mishawaka, Anne FitzHenry of Baltimore and Elizabeth Walker of South Bend; a son, Patrick J. of Kalamazoo, two grandchildren; and a sister, Joan Russell of Binghamton, N.Y.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus Santa Maria Council 553, 4th Degree Father J.A. Nieuwland Assembly, St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Noctural Adoration Society of the church, director of Michiana Male Chorus – formerly the Bendix Chorus – for 36 years, American Federation of Teachers, American Federation of Musicians, and American Choral Directors Association. He earned both his bachelor's and master's degrees from Notre Dame, in 1947 and 1953, respectively. He was the organist at St. Patrick's and St. Joseph Catholic churches, and vocal music coordinator and director of summer theater productions for the SBCSC. He was a veteran of World War II.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Hickey Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, where the parish and Knights of Columbus will say the rosary at 7:30 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Scholarship Fund of Associated Male Choruses of America Inc., P.O. Box 771, Brainerd, Minn. 56401 or the church.
