Lashell J. Stevens, 64 years old, passed away at 1:25 a.m. on Saturday, October 23, 2021 at home. Lashell was born on June 14, 1957 in South Bend to the late Floyd H. and Rheta G. (Burk) McAfee.  She has remained a lifelong resident of South Bend.  On August 16, 1986 in South Bend, Lashell and James L. “Jim” Stevens were united in marriage.  Jim preceded her in death on December 20, 2008.  Also preceding in death was her sister, Ines Welsh; and brother-in-law, Pat Holysz.

Lashell is survived by her two daughters, Colette K. Stevens of Mishawaka and Kelly N. Stevens of South Bend; step-daughter, Karen M. Shivers of South Bend; and step-son, Shawn M. (Leanne) Stevens of Granger; six grandchildren, Claire, Molly, and Anna Stevens, and DaeShun, Arthur, and Arnell Shivers; sister, Corinne Holysz; two brothers, Cary (Cathy) McAfee and Neal McAfee; and brother-in-law, Mike Welsh.

Lashell retired in 2016 as a sales representative with Avon where she was employed for 20 years. She worked at Martin's Supermarkets as a cashier for 8 years and also worked at Van Horne Jewelers for many years as a bookkeeper and consultant. 

Lashell loved to read, camp, and was on several bowling leagues over the years. She was also very active at her church, Southlawn UMC. She made prayer shawls, collected pop cans to help fundraise, co-led the youth group for a couple of years, and was the craft leader at Vacation Bible School for many summers.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, October 29, 2021 at Southlawn United Methodist Church where friends may visit with the family beginning at 4:00 p.m.  A private burial will take place at Southlawn Cemetery.  Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, South Bend is assisting the family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in memory of Lashell J. Stevens may be donated to the Center for Hospice, 501 Comfort Place, Mishawaka, IN  46545.  Online condolences may be offered to the family at www.palmerfuneralhomes.com.
