Merle Moragne (Weaver) - Class Of 1944 VIEW PROFILE

Merle Weaver
Merle Weaver passed away Monday, June 21, 2021 at Primrose Retirement Community in Mishawaka, Indiana. Merle was born to Edward and Elnora Moragne on March 8, 1926, in a small apartment above Smoke's Pool Hall on Chapin Street in South Bend, Indiana. The family soon moved to Kentucky Street where Merle grew up with her two sisters. Leaving high school to work at the post office in Chicago during World War II, she met a soldier, John Weaver, who was on leave. They fell in love and were married in South Bend on March 7, 1948 and to this union was born a son, Anthony.
Merle worked at St. Joseph Hospital as a delivery room obstetrics technician for many years and met friends there with whom she would foster lifetime relationships. She was very active in the community, served on the Board of the YMCA Community Service Branch, and received numerous commendations for her volunteer service. Merle was a long-time member of First A.M.E. Zion Church where she attended services regularly, served as the church's treasurer, and loved singing in the choir. Realizing the value of education, Merle returned to school and earned her high school diploma from Washington High School .She then pursued additional studies at Indiana University South Bend and Indiana Vocational Technical College.
Merle loved to travel. She often said "I want to see what I can see while I'm still able to see it". She travelled to many destinations including Hilton Head, Orlando, Miami, New Orleans, Atlantic City, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Toronto, Cozumel, Savannah, Denver, and New York City. Her travels were not all play. She made several mission trips, including journeys to the Bahama Islands and Jamaica with fellow travelers of faith to assist in the work of spreading the Word of Jesus. Merle, with her sister, Leona, also made a pilgrimage to Jerusalem and the Holy Land. With other people of faith, they walked in the footsteps of Jesus. This was a very spiritual, emotional, and memorable experience for Merle. The trip culminated with a tour of Egypt where Merle and Leona had a wonderful time viewing and visiting the Nile River, the Sphinx, and the Pyramids.
Merle was preceded in death by her husband John M. Weaver, her parents Edward and Elnora Moragne, her sisters Leona Allen and Florence Wright, and her niece Lynnette Wright. She leaves to cherish her memory her son Anthony "Tony" Weaver (Judy), granddaughter Richelle Lies (Chris), nieces Helen Johnston and Madeline Arnold (Richard), nephews LeRoy Allen (Brenda) and Kirk Wright (Shirley) and a host of loving family and friends.
