John Wesley Towles, 61, of South Bend, Ind., died following a short illness on Monday, April 28, in Memorial Hospital. He was born on Oct. 10, 1935, in Terre Haute, Ind., to Ella Mae Tillor, who survives, and to William Towles, who preceded him in death. Mr. Towles was also preceded in death by his friend and companion, Lavada Jackson, on April 3, 1996. He was a member of the 1953 Washington High School State Championship Football Team. He attended Indiana State University in Terre Haute for a short time.

Mr. Towles was employed as an iron pourer by the Sibley Machine and Foundry Company for 28 years.

Mr. Towles leaves to mourn his passing his son, Billy Towles; his mother, Ella Mae, and stepfather, Charles Tillor; stepdaughter, Lorraina Thomas; stepsons, Timothy Jackson and Jonathan Jackson; six sisters, Marian (Kenny) McFadden of South Bend, Clara Clemons, Majorie Doyle, Janet McCullum and Judy Towles, all of Milwaukee, Wis., and Bennie Towles of Terre Haute; four brothers, Robert Towles of South Bend, Walter, David and Virgil Towles, all of 1 Terre Haute; three aunts, Rubye (Melvin) Dungy, Carolyn Armstead and Lucille Allen, all of South Bend; an uncle, Lloyd Cottee of Indianapolis, Ind.; and a host of cousins, nephews and nieces.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday in Alford's Mortuary, with burial following in Highland Cemetery. Friends may call one hour prior to services. Alford's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
