Mr. William Carothers Sr., an illustrious man of grace, character and charm, lived his life quietly like a bright, shining day of dawn. He beheld the beauty of the earth at birth on Aug. 18, 1936, in Oxford, Miss. His parents, the late Ashley Carothers Sr. and Edna Carothers, reared him in a happy, loving and religious home. In 1952 the family moved to South Bend, Ind., and joined Grace A.M.E. Zion Church.

On Aug. 30, 1975, he united in the bonds of holy matrimony with Flora Key. As a loving husband and devoted father, he taught his children dignity and respect. Mr. Carothers was an employee of Sibley Machine Shop where he worked until retirement.

He was an active member of the Par-Putters Golf Club. On Sept. 18, 2000, he made his pilgrimage to heaven and inherited the gift of eternal life.

His spirit will live forever in the memories of the many lives that he t touched, and in the hearts of his cherished survivors: two sons, Jarrard Carothers, a student at Indiana Institute of Technology in Fort Wayne, Ind., and William Carothers Jr. of South Bend; two daughters, Angel Carothers, a student at Wittenberg University in Springfield, Ohio, and Kelli Carothers of South Bend; four brothers, Nathaniel (Ellen) Carothers, Shirley "Chuck" (Ruby) Carothers, Ashley Jr. (Amanda) Carothers and Alfred (Debbie) Carothers, all of South Bend; three aunts, Lorine Pearson, Amanda Steen of South Bend and Priscilla Grant of Memphis, Tenn.; three uncles, Baron Davidson, James Owens and Robert Owens, all of South Bend; five grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, Sept. 22, in the Grace A.M.E. Zion Church, 1211 Vassar Street, South Bend. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. with funeral services at noon. Burial to follow at the Riverview Cemetery, South Bend. The CLARK-O'NEAL FUNERAL HOME was entrusted with services
