Douglas L. Smith, 52, of West Edison Road, South Bend, Ind., died A of smoke inhalation on Wednesday morning, Dec. 20, from a fire in his residence. Mr. Smith was born on Feb. 17, 1948, in South Bend and lived most of his life in the South Bend area.

Survivors include his parents, William D. and Mary Alice (Weatherman) Smith of South Bend; a sister, Carol Smith (Gary) Monnard of Davenport, lowa; one brother, Donald Smith of Madison, Wis.; three nieces, Ashley and Melissa Smith, and Kristin Monnard; two nephews, Jeff and Brett; and one special cousin, Sharon Gray of South Bend. Doug was employed by Product Development Corporation.

He was a graduate of Washington High School, and attended North Central College in Naperville, Ill., and Louisville Theological Seminary in Louisville, Ky. He became very involved in politics and worked on the McGovern and Carter presidential campaigns in the 1970's.

Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today, Dec. 23, in the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 1501 W. Cleveland Road, with Rev. Daniel Clark officiating. Cremation will take Michiana Crematory. The family will receive friends immediately following the services in the social hall of the church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Westminster Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund, 1501 W. Cleveland Road, South Bend, 46628.
