Monica L. Sage, age 78, passed away on September 17, 2026 at Memorial Hospital. Monica was born on March 26, 1948 to Ralph and Genevieve Howard, who along with her sister Cindy Howard, preceded her in death. Monica was a lifelong resident of South Bend. She was a graduate of Washington High School and attended Indiana University South Bend.
Monica leaves behind her husband, David; sons Kenneth (Kelly) and Christopher (Nikki); daughter Suzanne Lewis (Patrick); seven grandchildren, Caleb Lewis, Rebecca Lewis, Katherine Lewis, Nolan Sage, Madelyn Sage, David Sage and Jack Sage; two great grandchildren; and two sisters, Patricia Conery and Rebecca Hopper.
Monica had many talents and a distinguished career that included District Manager for Kelly Temporary Services covering offices in the North Indiana and Southern Michigan area. She was the owner of two sporting good stores and also a real estate agent. Perhaps her greatest talent was her artwork and the beautiful paintings she created. Her bright and colorful paintings have been shown in galleries in Northern Indiana, Southern Michigan and the Indianapolis area.
Monica loved golf and was a member of Morris Park County Club where she especially enjoyed playing in the ladies18 hole league. Her golf on Wednesdays with the "golf girls" at various courses in the area was another favorite of hers. She not only loved golfing; she was good enough to have had three holes-in-one. She also enjoyed traveling with her husband, David, and visited over 70 countries.
She served on the Board of the Indiana/Michigan Chapter of the American Cancer Society for many years and was the recipient of the society's National St. George Medal and also the society's Fighting Spirit Award.
Monica loved to read. She was a great trivia player and usually beat everybody at Scrabble. She was a great friend to many and devoted to her family. She will be missed by all who knew her.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 at St. Pius X Catholic Church 52553 N. Fir Road Granger, IN 46530. There will be a visitation the night before on Tuesday, September 22, 2026 from 4:30 pm – 7:00 pm at Palmer Funeral Homes – Welsheimer North Chapel 17033 Cleveland Rd, South Bend, IN 46637. After Mass on Wednesday, the family invites you to join them for a celebration of life from 12:00 pm - 3:00 pm at Morris Park Country Club 2200 McKinley Ave. South Bend, IN 46615.
