SOUTH BEND - John E. Deren, 79, of South Bend, IN, passed away at 4:00 p.m. Saturday in Our Lady of Peace Hospital, Mishawaka, IN. John had owned and operated West Printing Company in South Bend since 1976, and recently retired after 35 years of service to the community. John was born on December 1, 1931, in South Bend, to the late Michael John and Victoria (Oleksej) Deren, and had lived in this area all of his life.
On June 14, 1952, in South Bend, he married Loretta Jean (Paskiet) Deren, who preceded him in death on January 9, 2000. Survivors include two daughters, Jodie (Jason) Edwards of Tacoma, WA, and Peggy (Mike) Michalski of South Bend; two sons, Jeff David (Rebecca) Deren of Edmonds, WA, and Michael John (Tina) Deren of Granger, IN; five grand-children, Mitchell, Laura and Sara Deren, Katherine and Jackson Blann. Also surviving is a sister, Rosemary Miholich of Mishawaka.
Two sisters, Helen Boatright and Harriet Lehner, and a brother, Michael Thomas Deren, preceded him in death.
John was a Navy veteran and a member of Little Flower Catholic Church. He was also an active member of South Bend Elks Lodge #235 where he progressed his way through the chairs and was honored to serve as Exalted Ruler.
A memorial Mass is scheduled for noon Friday in Little Flower Catholic Church, 54191 North Ironwood Road, South Bend. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to services.
