Frank Joseph Alford, son of Oather and Mandy (Butler) Alford, was born in South Bend, Ind., on Dec. 22, 1943. As a lifetime area resident, he was educated in the South Bend Community Public Schools, graduating from Washington High School. Frank served his country in the United States Army, spending one year in Korea. He was honorably discharged in 1967 with the National Defense Service Medal.
On June 29, 1969, in Niles, Mich., Frank and Karen Baker were united in holy matrimony, and to this union two children were born.
Frank furthered his education by attending Chicago State University, earning a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Sociology, in 1981. He held the position of property manager for the Chicago Housing Authority for two years. From 1996 to 1998 he was employed by the South Bend Housing Authority as its administrative director. He was a member of the National Conference of Black Mayors, Operation Reach Back, Lake Region Conference Executive Committee, nominated Man of the Year in 1976 for Chicago Housing of Urban Development, where he was also nominated Employee of the Year.
On the morning of Sunday, Aug. 3, after suffering an illness, Frank peacefully slipped away from our midst, in his residence on Brick Road, South Bend, at the age of 59.
His memory will be cherished by his loving wife, Karen; a daughter, Jennifer Alford; a son, Carlin (Robin) Alford, both of Nashville, Tenn.; three sisters, Mandy Martin of Huntsville, Ala., Fannie Alford-Carr and Artricia "Pat" Johnson, both of South Bend; and by two brothers, Oather Alford of Milwaukee, Wis. and Arthur Alford of South Bend, along with many other relatives and friends.
