SOUTH BEND - Jerry Don Cox, 77, of South Bend died at 1:03 a.m. Wednesday, January 3 in Brookdale Assisted Living. Jerry was born March 8, 1940 in Michigan City to the late Velma M. (Dee) and Clarence W. Cox and had lived in South Bend since 1957. He was also preceded in death by his siblings, Betty Jo Mitchell, Nancy Harvel, and William Cox. He is survived by his children, Linda Demers (Chris) of Reno, NV and Joe Cox (Catherine) of Tomball, TX; four grandchildren, Max and Ethan Demers, and Charlie and Ellie Cox; and a brother, Dan Cox (Judy) of Colorado Springs, CO.

Jerry was a 1958 graduate of South Bend Washington High School. He was a U.S. Army veteran and attained the rank of Sergeant while serving as an American advisor in Vietnam. He received the Bronze Star, U.S. Army Combat Infantryman Badge (CIB), Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Honor Medal 2nd Class. After his discharge in 1969, he was employed at A & P Grocery for 22 years, Fapco, Inc. for 23 years, and Citigroup for two years as a manager.

He loved to watch sports, especially Notre Dame football and basketball, Indiana University basketball, the Chicago Bears and the Chicago Cubs. He was thrilled to attend the 1988 Fiesta Bowl when Notre Dame won the national championship, and rejoiced when the Cubs finally won the World Series in 2016. He was a classic car enthusiast and owned a 1930 Ford Model A Coupe which he proudly restored to its original condition. Among his talents were playing the saxophone and clarinet as a member of the Swing Kings band and WHS marching band. He enjoyed travel with family including trips to California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Michigan, Nevada, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Texas.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, January 5 in the Welsheimer Family Funeral Home North, 17033 Cleveland Rd. Committal services and burial will follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Michigan City. The family will receive friends from 11:00 a.m. until the time of the service on Friday in the funeral home.
