Earl D. Pickens

Earl D. Pickens, 77 of South Bend, passed away at Memorial Hospital of South Bend during the early afternoon hours of April 26th. Earl was born in Peru, Indiana on October 3, 1944, to the late Ray A. and Marjorie M. (Cress) Pickens.

Earl proudly served his country in the United States Navy, being in charge of the flight deck, along with being a helicopter mechanic, during the Viet-Nam Conflict. Upon his honorable discharge he returned to the area. On June 19, 1998, he married Geenie L. Prince in South Bend. He worked for the Bendix Corp. of South Bend for 26 years before retiring. He was a member of American Legion Post 357 of South Bend, active Officer in VFW Post 1954 of North Liberty, Past Commander of American Legion Post 400 of Fish Lake, Past Commander of VFW Post 9820 of South Bend, and Past District Commander of the VFW. He served as a reserve officer for the Walkerton Police Dept. Earl enjoyed working on cars and fishing, yet his greatest joy was having cookouts and family gatherings.

Earl is survived by his loving wife, Gennie, along with his children, Tina Klindinst of South Bend and David (Heather) Pickens of Walkerton, 2 stepsons, Nicholas (Amber) Cukrowicz of Mishawaka and Thomas (Debbie) Tidey of South Bend. He was the proud grandfather of 8 and great-grandfather of 4 girls. Earl is also survived by his sister, Wilma (Susie) Emerick and his brother, Gary R. Pickens both of South Bend. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandson Thomas Pickens, great-granddaughter Joanna Criddle, sister Joyce Marie Pickens, and 2 brothers, Harold R. and Donald L. Pickens.

As per Earl's wishes, cremation is to take place. A Celebration of Earl's Life will be held on Saturday, June 11 at 2:00 P.M. at the VFW 1954 in North Liberty. Memorial contributions may be made in Earl's name to the donor's choice.

Hanley and Sons Funeral Home, 23421 State Rd. 23, is assisting the family with arrangements and wish to extend their deepest heartfelt sympathy to all of Earl's family and friends.
