Mary Evelyn Miller

MARY EVELYN MILLER

Mary Evelyn Miller, aged 75, passed away peacefully on November 15, 2024, in Mishawaka, IN. Born on June 28, 1949, in South Bend, IN, she was a daughter to the late Howard and Laura (Van Cleave) Miller, and a sister to the late Carol (Miller) Ballard.

Mary will be remembered as a loving sister to Thomas Miller of Elkhart; an affectionate Aunt to her nieces and nephews; and a cherished friend to Wanada Baxter-Potter of Mesa, AZ. Her fervent love of geology and history, matched by her dedication to the youth geology club, marked her as a passionate educator and avid learner. She revered her parents' military legacy and was known for being exceptionally loyal and courageous. Mary's protective nature was a comforting embrace to all who knew her. Her brilliant spirit and tenacious heart will be deeply missed as we celebrate the life of a truly magnificent woman.

Mary's exuberant spirit and love for humor left an indelible mark on the hearts of her loved ones. She reveled in sharing jokes, puns, and good-humored malapropisms, her gentle mischief lighting up any gathering. While Mary never roamed far from home, she was an avid collector of adventures through the postcards, souvenirs, and stories that came her way from friends near and far. Her treasured collection of souvenir spoons was a testament to her joy in collecting a piece of every state without stepping outside her doorstep.

Mary's zest for the detailed beauty in small mechanisms reflected her keen attention to the intricacies of life. A simple mechanical pencil could capture her admiration for hours, as she celebrated the elegance of its design.

Her devout faith was evidenced by her membership at Westminster Presbyterian Church. As a child, she never missed a Sunday school session - a dedication recognized through multiple attendance awards. In retirement, she joyfully contributed her time to playing in the handbell choir, sharing her musical gifts. Although the congregation formally disbanded, Mary maintained her ties to its people, embodying the notion that a church is not merely a building, but a family.

No services are being held at this time, a private inurnment will take place at Fairview Cemetery, in the spring, amongst family and friends. Palmer Funeral Home – Welsheimer Chapel, 17033 Cleveland Road, South Bend, IN 46635 is assisting the family with arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mary’s honor may be given to the Town of Osceola – Mary Miller Park Improvement Fund, 850 Lincolnway West, Osceola, IN 46561.
