Kathryn Rose Hullinger

Mar. 13, 1949 - Sep. 25, 2011

SOUTH BEND - Kathryn Rose Hullinger, 62, died at home in the presence of her family on September 25, 2011, following a courageous 7-month battle with uterine leiomyosarcoma.

She was born March 13, 1949, in South Bend, IN, to Edward and Margaret (Jewett) Hullinger. She was a '67 graduate of Washington High School.

Kathy started with Franciscan Alliance in 1994 in environmental services and then worked as an administrative assistant for the Group Purchasing department. She transitioned to Central Purchasing upon its inception in late 2001. Kathy was the first staff member of CP and welcomed the new position. She was always cheerful, willing to help us learn the ways of corporate office, and wanting to succeed in her new role as procurement technician. She had a passion for sewing, crocheting and knitting. She loved teaching others her craft and did so as a 4H leader, as well as teaching community classes through local craft stores. She had hoped to retire and spend her days in her sewing room making things for family and friends.

Kathy is survived by her children, Jerry L. Barrier Jr., Savannah, TN, and Jennifer R. (Jonathan) Rutledge, Saint Joseph, MI; two grandchildren, Emma Rose Rutledge and Ethan William Rutledge, Saint Joseph, MI; mother, Margaret Hullinger, South Bend, IN; 3 stepdaughters, Debbie (Dan) Smogor, Granger, IN, Kimberly (Jim) Cole, Mishawaka, IN, Melissa Horvath, Mishawaka, IN; 6 step-grandchildren (Austen, Lauren, Brittney, Kasi, Samantha and Joseph); one brother, James (Jennifer) Hullinger, South Bend, IN; two sisters, Kris Hullinger, South Bend, IN, Karen (Bob) Passerelli, Las Vegas, NV. She is further survived by nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins, and many friends. She was preceded in death by her father, Edward.

In honoring her wishes, there will be no funeral services.

A special thank you to The Center for Hospice Care, Dr. Michael Rodriguez5, Sheila Fleming CNP, and all of the wonderful nurses at Michiana Hematology Oncology (Mishawaka). Also a big thank you to her cousin Dana and sister Kris for making it possible for us to keep her at home like she wanted. She will be missed by all who knew her.
