Richard L. Hamman, 68, of South Bend, Indiana passed away Sunday, September 4, 2016 in his home. Richard was born on April 6, 1948 in Warsaw, Indiana to Richard A. and Letha F. (Walters) Hamman.

He retired from the New Prairie School System, where he was employed as a teacher. Richard was a 1st grade teacher for eighteen years. He taught at Olive Township and Prairie View Schools. After retiring from teaching, Richard worked as a car salesman at Campbell Ford and Tyler Automotive in Niles, Michigan.

On August 21, 1971, in the former Portage United Methodist Church in South Bend, he married Lois A. Wood, who survives. He is also survived by his son, Jacob (Ferris) Hamman of South Bend, Indiana; two grandchildren, Christine and Michaela; and his sister, Linda Secrist of San Lorenzo, California. Richard was preceded in death by his sister, Judith Newsom.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m., Friday, September 9, 2016 in Corpus Christi Church. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, where members of the United States Air Force and the American Legion Post #284 will conduct Military Services. A visitation will be held from 2:00 until 8:00 p.m. Thursday in the Kaniewski Funeral Home, 3545 N. Bendix Drive, where a rosary will be prayed at 4:00 p.m.

Richard was a member of Corpus Christi Parish. He served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the American Legion Post #49 in Warsaw, Indiana and the V.F.W. He received his Bachelors and Masters Degree in Education from Indiana University. Richard loved his family, especially his granddaughters.
