Joe affectionately known by many as “Big Guy” was born on February 8, 1950, in Portageville, MO as the sixth child of the late Homer and Mamie Jennings. Joe attended Washington High School in South Bend, IN where he participated in football and track, graduating in 1968. He was then drafted into the US Army where he served overseas for two and half years. In his professional career he committed decades of his life to the South Bend Community School Corporation where he proudly retired as a building engineer.
A man of spiritual wisdom
Joe’s love for Christ was instilled at a young age. He assiduously studied the word routinely embarking in a deeper understanding of the bible. His profound knowledge of the bible and scriptures made him a go to person for many as he departed his biblical wisdom to all he encountered.
A Love for family
Big Guy loved his family beyond measure. His legacy continues with two sons Joseph Jennings Jr. and Jameel Jennings of South Bend, IN born to the union of Debrah Jennings; five grandchildren Brejayana, Joseph III, Candice, Jameela and Jayla; and three great grandchildren that he absolutely adored all of South Bend, IN. He also leaves to cherish his memory four sisters, Erma Odom, Helen Jennings, Beatrice Jennings, Gloria Jennings and one brother Ernest Jennings along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Preceding him in death are his parents, Homer and Mamie Jennings, brothers Homer Jennings, James Jennings and Jerry Jennings and sisters Dorothy Jennings and Ida Owens.
Joe, a true country boy legend, will be missed by many. Although our hearts are heavy with the absence of his presence, we will continue to joyfully embrace the everlasting memories created.
