John A Solmos
John A. Solmos
Jan. 11, 1938 - July 10, 2017
SOUTH BEND - John A. Solmos, 79, passed away at 11:00 pm Monday, July 10, 2017.
John was born on January 11, 1938, in South Bend, to John and Theresa (Gruber) Solmos. He graduated from Kansas State University with a master's degree in education and he lettered in 3 sports and was a skilled quarterback. After graduation, at the age of 25, he played minor league baseball. John retired as a teacher and coach from Washington High School and was inducted into the Washington High School Athletics Hall of Fame. John loved watching all sports especially college football, basketball and the Chicago Cubs; he also enjoyed a good round of golf. But most of all he loved his dear family, especially his 3 grandchildren who were close to his heart. On June 19, 1965, he married the former Marie L. Schreier, who survives along with a daughter, Jacqueline Solmos of Oak Park, IL, a son, Jon (Susan) Solmos of Chesterton, IN, 3 grandchildren, Brandon, Eva, and Sophia, and a sister, Janice Jarvie of Denver, CO, and many nieces and nephews whom he dearly loved. John was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Jennifer, and a sister, Patricia Ann DeWolf. The family wishes to thank Dr. Ansari and his caring staff and the wonderful nurses with the Center for Hospice.
According to John's wishes, cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends will take place on Sunday, July 16, 2017, from 4-6 pm in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 Kemble Avenue. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am Monday July 17, 2017, at Our Lady of Hungary Church. Burial of his cremated remains will follow at Highland Cemetery.
