Washington 1939 Frieda (Marialke) Shabaz

SOUTH BEND - Frieda L. Shabaz 95 died Thursday, November 3, 2016. Born to German immigrants Karl and Bertha Marialke on October 30, 1921, Mrs. Shabaz grew up on the west side of South Bend and attended Washington High School along with her sister Elsie and brother Albert who preceded her in death. As young people, they all three attended South Bend Gospel Tabernacle currently known as Southgate Church. She and her husband Wilson, who survives her, served 50 years of their 74-year marriage pastoring Assemblies of God churches in Valparaiso, Terre Haute, and from 1964-1986 Northside Assembly of God (currently known as New Life Church) in South Bend. After retiring in 1986, they pastored Blissville Church of the Brethren.

Mrs. Shabaz was renowned for her memorable hospitality and extraordinary cooking. She hosted Women's Bible studies and youth gatherings frequently in those years of ministry. The many people impacted remember her fondly for her spiritual investments in them. Her home is adorned with curios brought to her by missionaries and international guests that dined at her table. Even into her last years when her strength diminished she was often wondering how she could put together a nice luncheon to invite people who could use encouragement or friendship.

Mrs. Shabaz died as she lived, a life based on this Biblical truth from I Tim. 1:12 “I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him until that day.” In her last days she was confident that there is more to life than this earthly existence and was surrounded by her loving family: Her husband Wilson Shabaz; her daughter Sharon (Duane) Sautter of Granger, IN; her son, Wayne (Cynthia) Shabaz of Ft. Myers, FL; six grandchildren, Nathan, David and Alissa Shabaz of Holland, MI; Christopher (Tasha) Sautter of South Bend, IN; Matthew (Jennifer) Sautter of Mishawaka, IN; Danielle Sautter of Granger, IN; and four great-grandchildren, Noah, Emma, Caroline and Liam Sautter.

Visitation will be Tuesday, November 8, 2016 from 4-8 p.m. at Palmer Funeral Home, 17131 Cleveland Road, South Bend. Her coronation service will be held Wednesday, November 9, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at Southgate Church, 3717 S. Michigan Street, South Bend. In honor of Mrs. Shabaz's continued interest and heart for the Christ-centered discipleship of young people, the family requests any contributions be made to: Chi-Alpha Campus Ministries, 2821 Edison Rd, South Bend 46615 - that serves on local college campuses.
