Mr. Szucs was born on March 4, 1924, in South Bend, IN, to the late Geza and Anna (Arr) Szucs. Also preceding him in death were his two brothers, Joseph G. (Evelyn) Szucs and Edward W. (Marie) Szucs.

On October 16, 1948, in South Bend, he married Irene Nagy, who survives. Also surviving are his children, Cheryl K. Takach of Granger, John P. (Judy) Szucs of South Bend, Sandra M. (Jim) Brown of South Bend and ten grandchildren, Ryan Takach of Granger, Nicholas (Amy) Takach, Leslie Takach, John (Amber) Szucs, Michael (Meg) Szucs, Jeffrey Szucs, and Daniel Szucs, Taylor Brown, Parker Brown, and Preston Brown, all of South Bend. He is also survived by three great-grandchildren; Ethan John Szucs, Fox Nicholas Robert Takach, and Ava Elizabeth Szucs. Also surviving is his sister, Anna 'Ancie' Aranowski, of South Bend, IN.

After working at the Studebaker Corp., he joined the Army and served in the 3rd Armored Tank Division WWII, under General George S. Patton, where he received multiple medals of Honor, including a Purple Heart. Upon his return to the states, he married Irene. In 1951, John joined the South Bend Fire Dept.-a job he truly enjoyed. When he retired, as Battalion Chief, in 1993 after 42 years, he was the longest serving fireman in South Bend history. John was also a member of the Painter's Local 1118, working for Dan's Painting for over 40 years.

EJ was a founder of the Hungarian Democratic Club where he became famous for his fried chicken. An avid Notre Dame Fan, he loved to tailgate. He enjoyed his retirement years at Shavehead Lake, where he entertained family and friends and watched his grandchildren grow. He loved nothing more than a hot day with a cold beer, cruising on 'Captain E. J's' pontoon where he coined his infamous phrase, 'Dis is Livin'.

In the past year, he was blessed with three great grandchildren, bringing even more joy to his truly full life. And though he will be missed every day, his love, laughter, and sense of humor will live in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. 'Thanks for the visit!' EJ.
Visitation will be on Thursday, July 11 from 4 to 8 p.m. in Hahn Funeral Home, 505 W. 8th Street, Mishawaka. Funeral services will be held on Friday, July 12 at 11 a.m. in the funeral home with Rev. Jeffrey Largent officiating.
