SOUTH BEND - Edward J. Podell, 68, of 1928 Hampstead Court, died at 4:23 p m. Sunday in his home after an Illness.

Mr. Podell retired in 1983 from Grand Trunk Western Railroad, Battle Creek, Mich, as superintendent of rules and training, after 33 years of service. He was born May 24, 1922, In South Bend and lived in Battle Creek from 1937 to 1983, when he returned to South Bend.

On June 13, 1946, in South Bend, he married Virginia L McColley, who survives. Also surviving are two sons, Mark E. of Fort Worth, Texas, and Neal P. of Park Forest, IL; two grandchildren; and a sister, Ethel Zakrowskl of South Bend. He was a member of SL Judes Catholic Church, International Association of Railway Operating Officers, Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and American Legion Post 700, and a veteran of World War II. He was a graduate of Indiana University.

Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Welsheimer Funeral Home, 521 N. William SL Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Fort Custer National Cemetery, Augusta, Mich. Memorial contributions may be made to Bluebird Fund, in care of Potato Creek State Park Nature Center; Hospice of SL Joseph County Inc, or SL Judes Catholic Church.
