Joseph N. Nyerges, 85, passed away at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, March 27, 2010, in Hospice House. Joseph was born on July 10, 1924, in South Bend, to Anton and Agnes (Tars) Nyerges. He retired in 1970 from the South Bend Fire Department and then worked as manager of the Firefighters Credit Union until he retired in 1997. Mr. Nyerges was a World War II Army veteran and enjoyed gardening and his Thursday morning breakfasts with the retired firefighters. Joe was an avid Notre Dame football and basketball fan.

On May 31, 1947, in South Bend, he married the former Rosemary Andert, and was a devoted husband for over 62 years. She survives along with a son, John (Stacy) Nyerges of Granger; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Lindsay; numerous nieces and nephews; and two brothers-in-law, Robert (Betty) Andert and John Andert.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Agnes Tomolak, Mary Wozniak and Margaret Rankin; and by a brother, Anton Nyerges.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 30, 2010, in St. Matthew Cathedral. Burial will follow at Highland Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 4-8 p.m. today in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue.
