CONSTANCE (WILLIAMS) GREEN

Constance Green June 20, 1944 - Sept. 21, 2015 SOUTH BEND - Constance "Connie" Delaine Green passed away on Monday, September 21, at Memorial Hospital. Connie was born June 20, 1944, in Aliceville, Alabama, to Robert Lee Williams and Helen Hughes Williams. Connie's family moved to South Bend, Indiana, when she was two years old. Both parents preceded her in death.

She attended South Bend Community Schools and graduated in the Washington High School class of 1962. Mrs. Green attended Indiana State University and graduated from the Indiana University where she also received her Master's Degree.

She had a 38-year career as an educator in South Bend schools. Prior to retiring from the Social Studies Department at Washington High School, she taught at Whitney Young Alternate School. Constance was a lifelong learner and continued to take courses to acquire additional information needed to teach her students and enhance technology skills.

She received many awards and recognitions including: Indiana Geography Teacher of the Year, St. Joseph County Soil and Water Conservation Teacher of the Year Award and The Michiana Applied Economic Teacher of the Year Award, as well as the Rosa Parks Service Award from the Martin Luther King Senior Men's Club. She was a co-founder of Girlfriends Club at Washington High School. Connie was a well-known community advocate committed to improving the quality of life for underserved communities. As a college student she participated in Freedom Marches in the South. In 1988, she was elected as delegate to the National Democratic Convention. In 1986 she campaigned for a South Bend Council person-at-large positions. Connie was known for her culinary skills and freely shared her prized dishes, but not the recipe. A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Connie previously served as president and parliamentarian of the local graduate chapter. In addition, she was former president of Amvets Auxiliary for the State of Indiana Elks. She was a very active member of Olivet African Methodist Episcopal Church where she was a member of the Steward Board.

In 1969, Constance married Richard Green, Sr. and they were blessed with two children and five grandchildren. Connie is survived by husband, Richard Green, son, Richard Green II of Grand Rapids, MI, daughter, Nikole Green of South Bend. She cherished her grandchildren: Damaino and Darrien Bureau and Dakota Dockery, all of South Bend, IN, and Richard Green III and Randle Green of Grand Rapids, MI. Also surviving is her sister, Dr. Rosa A. Smith (Frank Wharton) of Windermere, Florida. Connie, more than anything, loved the Lord. Her strong faith prepared Connie for her September 21 journey.

Cobb Funeral Home, 3525 S. Michigan Street, is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be held on Friday, Sept. 25, at the funeral home from 5-7 p.m. Delta Sigma Theta's Omega Omega Service will begin at 6:30 followed by Girlfriends ritual. Funeral service will be held at Olivet A.M.E. Church on Saturday, September 26, at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that contributions be made in Connie's memory to Olivet A.M.E.
