Carl G. "Snooky" Pope

Sept. 19, 1941 - Oct, 16. 2001

Mr. Carl George 'Snooky" Pope, 60, who resided in South Bend. Ind., passed away following a sudden illness at 2 a.m. on Tuesday. Oct 16, in the Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center. On Sept. 19, 1941, in South Bend. he was born to the union of Ella M. (Townsend) Pope and the late George H. Pope Jr . At a very early age, Carl confessed his faith in Christ and was baptized under the pastorage of Reverend B.L. White of Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church. He and his wife later united with Macedonia Baptist Church under Reverend F.D. Johnson.

Carl was educated in the South Bend Community School System and graduated from Washington High School in 1961. While attending Washington High School, Carl demonstrated his love and talent in football. Along with his brother Ron as the center, they played in the conference championship games in 1960-1961 Carl was also a cadet machine shop instructor at Washington. Carl's many talents include tailoring, upholstering, auto mechanics and artistry.

He served in the United States Marines for four years and was honorably discharged in 1965.

Carl held employment positions with Bendix Corporation. Clark Equipment, South Bend Lathe and A. Quality Machine.

On Dec. 30. 1980. Carl and Shirley Williams were united in matrimony. Carl leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife. Shirley; three sons, Carl Jr. of Las Vegas. Nev.. Reginald of Oakland, Calif.. and Andrew of Chicago, Ill.; one daughter, Crystal (Kenneth) Byrd of South Bend: seven grandchildren; his mother. Ella M. Pope of South Bend; three brothers, Ronald (Mary Rose). Kenneth and Michael (Donna). all of South Bend; a sister, Rosalind (Elige) Hannah of Niles, 'Mich.: aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends. 

He was preceded in death by his father, George H. Pope Jr.; paternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Pope Sr.; and maternal grandparents. Mr. and Mrs. George B. Townsend.

Funeral services will be held at noon on Saturday, Oct 20. in the Greater St. John Missionary Baptist Church, with family visitation one hour before the service. Interment will follow at Highland Cemetery. Arrangements have been entrusted to Alford's Mortuary
