Douglas Michael Wilfing

Sep. 6, 1949 - May 12, 2007

Douglas M. Wilfing, 57, passed away at 1:20 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, 2007, in Saint Joe Care Center, South Bend, from complications of diabetes and liver disease.

Douglas was born on September 6, 1949, and is survived by his folks, mother, Mary L. Wilfing, and father, Rudolph J. (Helen) Wilfing Sr. In the event of my death, I leave to cherish and want them to celebrate my life, my children, Michael (Julie) Wolfe and Kimberly (Michael) A. Howard, John D. Wilfing, Kate F. Wilfing, and Anna M. Wilfing. Seven grandchildren, Collin, Tanner, Daisey and Lilly Wolfe, Caleb, Aidan and Brennan Howard. Also thanks to my brothers, Rudy of California, Scott (Pam) and Greg (Gail), both of South Bend, and their families; my many friends from Raco Service Supply, Englewood Electrical Wholesale and Square D of South Bend, Grand Rapids and Traverse City, All Phase Electrical Wholesale of South Bend, Lima, Toledo, Muskegon, Grand Rapids, South Haven, Holland, Cadillac, T.C., Lansing, Battle Creek, Kalamazoo and Benton Harbor, and Ackerman Electrical Wholesale of Grand Rapids. To all my friends: Â?thanksÂ? - Steve and Val, Steve Sisco, Don Lundberg, Joan Mow, Paul Neesen, Jim Holdaway, John Britton, Kevin Jones, Bruce H., Kim Mow, Joe Grahowski, John Alt, Tom M., Dave T., Don U., Gene S., Terry S., Andy V., Mary Bange, Bob Coon, Scott Wilkining, Midge Brown, Laura K., Kate D., Mike W., Gary B.; friends at Friday's - Julie and Jamie, Carla, Trey and Greg; from All Phase - Mr. Kinney; from Revco - Jeff Fuller, Bob Londo, Don Hammond, Charlie L., Bill H., Brian Hankis, Jerry Hankis, Les Wallace, Bill Darnell, Keith F., Dale C., Jack G., Dave Workman, Dave Darrow, Tom Grego, John Wickering, Mike M. "Mac," Mario Nova, Donny Smith, Joyce Thompson, son Joe, daughter, Cathy, Frank and Rene, and Gregory; special friends - Jeff and Sue Skodack, Paula and Patty Weil, Lynn Reynolds, Ron Rutkowski, Gwen W.M., Judy King L. and Mark L., Ron and Phyllis McFall, Patty and Bob from Muskegon, Tim and Lisa McBride, Tom Delange, Charlie Anderson, Rusty McBride; the boys of Litscher Electric Links, Roy Sweet, Bill Butcher, Ron Cook, Duane Nelson; the people of Graybar; the families from St. Hedwig Catholic Church; and the Pluta, Borlik, O'Chaps, Doty and Turza families.Â?

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Anna Wilfing, Helen Freed, Charles Penn of Indianapolis; his son, Andrew D. (12/10/1969-12/25/1969); and an uncle, Hugh Penn. Douglas never fully recovered from his first stroke on April 10, 1996, and then had another one August 10, 2002, which really was the clincher. Thanks to all the doctors and nurses along the way, especially Susan S., and then there was Andrea H. (for rehab/my favorite). A big thanks to my mom and family for all their special help in my time of need - boy were they giving.

Douglas graduated in 1967 from Washington High School, and then entered the work force instead of college or the service. He learned a lot from the school of hard knocks. On November 10, 2005, I lost ability to flex fingers on my right hand. It seems I do everything on the 10th of the month, August 10, 2002, 2nd stroke, losing the right side of my body, and use of right hand and leg, and August 10, 2004, melt down, and then 3 months of r-n-r at Holy Cross Rehab, weight up due to dehydration. He spent three months (September to November) at Holy Cross Care Center in San Pierre, IN, and got some good re-hab help there after a meltdown in August 2004 that almost killed him.

Cremation will take place and there will be no services. ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, is assisting the family with arrangements. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Doug's memory to the Diabetes Foundation.

Condolences for the family may be sent to www.sjfh.net.
