SOUTH BEND - Raymond "Sugar" Cukrowicz, passed away early Thursday morning, September 16, 2010 at Plainwell Pines Nursing Home Plainwell, MI. He was born on Sept 10, 1924 in South Bend, IN to Mary Paprocki and Nicholas Cukrowicz.

He served his country in WWII as part of the United States Army.

On September 18, 1948 Raymond was united in marriage to Elizabeth Koehler. Raymond and Elizabeth were long time residents of South Bend where he was employed by the Studebaker Corporation and later AM General Corporation. In 2005 Ray and Liz moved to Kalamazoo, MI to be closer to their family.

Raymond is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; daughter, Beverly (Martin) Ciesielski; and son, Ronald (Diane) Cukrowicz; and his grand-daughters, Cory (Nicholas) Maar, Jodi (Jason Maycock) Ciesielski, Christine (Christopher) Horne, and Kelly (Ryan Williams) Cukrowicz. Raymond is also survived by two great-granddaughters, Adelaide Williams and Mikayla Horne.

Raymond was a lifelong member of PNA #83. He was an active member of the South Bend bowling community where he ran the "Sugars Sweeper". He enjoyed camping, slow pitch softball, and card playing. Sugar was an avid Notre Dame, New York Yankee and Cubs fan. As anyone who knew him can attest, the word stranger was not in his vocabulary and above all he loved life, making people laugh, and his family. He will be greatly missed.

Visitation will be held from 4:00 - 7:00 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 19, at the Palmer Funeral Home-Guisinger Chapel, 3718 South Michigan St, South Bend, and one hour prior to services Monday at the Church. Services will be at 10:00 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at Southlawn United Methodist Church, 60756 U.S. 31 South. Rev. Ron Dixon will officiate. Graveside services with military rites will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to In-House Hospice, 53600 Holiday Terrace, Suite 24A Kalamazoo, MI 49009. Online condolences to the Cukrowicz family may be sent to www.palmerfuneralhomes.com
