Alfred Lee "Momma Lee" (Morrow) Winters

Alfred Lee Winters "Momma Lee" departed this life to go home with Jesus on July 31, 2012. Alfred Lee was born on September 24, 1922, to the union of Henry & Cora (Tyus) Morrow in Hennings, TN. The family relocated to South Bend in the mid-30s.

In the late 30s, at an early age, she confessed her love for Jesus and became a devoted, caring and committed member of Grace A.M.E. Zion Church until God decided she labored long enough in the church. For many years, she chaired the Women Day Program. As a choir member, she brought the Wooten Choral of Chicago, IL, to Grace for a concert. She also was a Steward and Trustee of the church. She loved her church so much that every reunion (30+) she would ask the family for a patron ad or donation.

Momma Lee was the first African American employee at Sue's Bridal Shoppe on South Michigan Street. She worked for Project Step, Model Cities, Housing Allowance as an inspector. She was a member of the Friendly Twelve, The Urban League Guild for over 50 years, holding a variety of positions, Real Services Senior Program and Catholic Charities.

Alfred Lee was united in Holy Matrimony in 1942 to James E. Winters Jr. To this union, four children were born, Dennis Bruce Winters (deceased), Diane J. Winters-Taylor of Indianapolis, Barbara K. Chase of Cincinnati & Wendy Winters of South Bend. Also surviving are grandchildren Dennis B. Winters Jr., Joanna I. Harvell, Donna R. White & Maurice Winters of South Bend, Christopher Winters of Indianapolis, Karyn Jones of Westland, MI, Keith Jones of Detroit, MI, Brandon Winters-Sterling of Taylor MI, Kimberly J. Broadnax-Winters, Jacqueline Shears & Sherri Miles of Indianapolis, Deborah Taylor of Nashville, TN, Anthony Taylor & John Chase of South Bend, and Michelle Davis of Indianapolis. 27 great-grandchildren & 14 great-great-grandchildren also survive.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry & Cora (Tyus) Morrow; brother, Henry Morrow Jr.; and granddaughters, Penny Elaine Chase and Lisa Carter.
