SOUTH BEND - Mr. Raymond Edward Poindexter, 61, of Lockport, Illinois, formerly of South Bend, Indiana, passed away on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at Silver Cross Hospital in Joliet, Illinois. He was born on May 16, 1949 in South Bend, to the union of Katherine (Armstrong) and Alonzo Poindexter, Sr., they preceded him in death.

Raymond graduated from South Bend Washington High School in 1968. He enlisted in the United States Air Force and received an Honorable Discharge after completing his Tour of Duty. He retired from the former Uniroyal Rubbers of Mishawaka, Indiana.

Ray was united in marriage to his beautiful and loving wife, Charlene Burts, who survives. Along with his wife, he also leaves to cherish his memory, five daughters, Marie Poindexter of Minnesota, Danita Fennessee-Poindexter (Andre) and Antoinette Burts, all of Lockport, Kiewann Poindexter of Joliet, Illinois, and Niekiea Poindexter of Indianapolis, Indiana; four sons, Anthony Poindexter, Rayandole E. Poindexter, and Joaquin Poindexter, all of Indianapolis, and Adrean Burts of Lockport; two stepchildren, Jeremy Winston, and Tanika Jones, both of South Bend; 18 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren; four sisters, Delores Chambliss of South Bend, Shelia Taylor of Phoenix, Arizona, Jacquelyn Harvey and Judy Harvey of Los Angeles, California; six brothers, Jimmy Poindexter, Alonzo Poindexter, Jr., Michael Poindexter, and Calvin Poindexter, all of South Bend; David (and Terri) Poindexter of Indianapolis, and David Coleman of Memphis, Tennessee; a good friend, Jonathon Hill, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. Along with his parents,

Raymond was also preceded in death by two sisters, Lavada and Barbara; and two brothers, Thomas and Wesley.

Raymond was a hardworking and fun-loving person; he was well-loved and regarded as very polite and mannerable and always greeted you with a warm and charming smile, and a hearty handshake. He will be truly missed. The funeral service for Raymond is at 1 p.m. Saturday with visitation from 11 a.m. until service time at Cobb Funeral Home 3525 S. Michigan St. South Bend A book completed - a page turned; A life well-lived - a rest well earned.
