MISHAWAKA - Stephen Kosanovich, 71, passed away at 4:50 p.m. Monday, March 26, in Saint Joseph Regional Medical Center, Mishawaka. Steve was born on February 17, 1936, in South Bend, to Josip and Smilja (Zernich) Kosanovich.

He graduated from Washington High School and Ball State University.

Mr. Kosanovich retired from the South Bend Community School Corp. in 1995. He served as principal at Studebaker, Nuner and Warren schools. He was a member of the Sts. Peter & Paul Serbian Orthodox Church, was a past president of its church board, past president of the Serb National Federation #174, past president of the South Bend Principals Assoc., a board member of the Indiana State Principals Assoc., a member of the Theta Chi fraternity, the Men's Honorary Blue Key Fraternity, and the Lions Club.

On June 13, 1964, in South Bend, he married the former Smilia Mandich, who died on July 16, 1996. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Nick Kosanovich.

Surviving are a daughter, Ann (Kevin) Witkowski of Granger; a son, Mark Kosanovich of San Antonio, TX; three granddaughters, Abigail, Caroline and Elizabeth; a sister, Mildred Miskin of South Bend; a brother, John Kosanovich of Mishawaka; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 29, in Sts. Peter & Paul Serbian Orthodox Church. Burial will follow at Southlawn Cemetery. Family and friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. today in the Zahoran Funeral Home, 1826 S. Kemble Avenue, where a prayer service will be recited at 7 p.m. Friends may also call one hour prior to services in the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Sts. Peter & Paul Serbian Orthodox Church.
