EDWARD V. ANTKOWIAK

SOUTH BEND - Edward V. Antkowiak, 83, formerly of Mead Street and Harrison Road, South Bend, and Autumn Lake, Mishawaka, passed away on Saturday, September 1, 2007. Edward was born on December 23, 1924, in South Bend, to the late Joseph and Rose (Ratajski) Antkowiak. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Walter, and by a sister, Clara L. Niedbalski.

He's survived by his two brothers, Chester and Stanley, both of South Bend, three nephews and two nieces. Eddie was a 1943 Washington High School graduate and a member of the 1941-1943 football team, and was recognized in 1943 as a member of the All-Twin City Football Team at his tackle position.

WWII took Eddie to the U.S. Navy as a torpedoman's mate, stationed in Hawaii. He worked for a number of years for the City of South Bend in the weights & measures department and retired from AM General. Eddie was an avid golfer experiencing a hole-in-one at the Bowlers Country Club where he was a regular member. Bowling was also a passion of his for many years as he competed in league play. White Sox baseball, IU football and golf were his viewing favorites. A gentle man with a big heart and friendly spirit, never wanting to offend, with a deep and lasting faith in his religion.

There will be no services at this time. ST. JOSEPH FUNERAL HOME, 824 S. Mayflower Road, is assisting the family. Donations may be made at the choice of the donor. Condolences for the family may be sent to www.sjfh.

He knew that you were suffering He knew that you would never get well on earth again. It breaks our hearts to lose you, But you didn't go alone.
