ELKHART - Aloysius A. Skwiercz, 84, of Elkhart, IN, formerly of Osceola and South Bend, died April 24, 2016, at East Lake Nursing and Rehab in Elkhart, with his sons and Joan and Jim Van Dusen at his bedside.

He was born April 25, 1931, in South Bend, to Joseph and Cecilia (Nowacka) Skwiercz. Al grew up in South Bend attending St. Adelbert's grade school and graduated from Washington High School South Bend in 1950. He joined the United States Marine Corps in 1951 and was honorably discharged in 1954 with the rank of Master Sergeant after serving in the Korean War. He started working at Bendix in South Bend after high school. Al later worked at Wheelabrator Frye Co. in Mishawaka until 1988. Al worked in maintenance at Castle Point apartments until his retirement in 1993.

On August 25, 1956, he married Patricia J. Stoner at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Mishawaka, IN, by the Rev. Eldon Miller. In 2006 Father Miller renewed their vows on their 50th wedding anniversary at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mishawaka, IN.

Al started the Wheelbrator Credit Union and was President and Chairman of the board until the closing of Wheelbrator. He was a member of Queen of Peace Catholic Church since 1959. He remained active in the church for the past 56 years including helping with the funeral dinners.

Al enjoyed spending time in his garden, hiking at Potato Creek State Park and bird watching. Al and his wife spent much of their retirement traveling around the country.

He is survived by a son, Andy (John Gold) Skwiercz; two daughters, Debbie (Pete) Buckley of Avon, CO, and Janice Cook; one grandchild, Joshua Cook of Osceola, IN. Brothers, Joseph (Dottie) Skwiercz of Granger, IN, Ben (Olivia) Skwiercz of Washington, sisters-in-law, Pearl Forcier of South Bend and Joan (Jim) Van Dusen of Elkhart, brother-in-law, Jerry (Nancy) Stoner of Edwardsburg, MI, and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife Patricia on December 27, 2015, by a son, Arthur in 2010, parents, Joseph in 1997 and Cecilia in 1975, brothers, Walter in 1952 in Korea, Anthony in 1972, Daniel in 2006 and John in 2015.

The family would like to thank the staff at East Lake Nursing Home and Rehab, Harbor Light Hospice and Fresenius Medical Care for the excellent treatment Al received.

Memorial contributions may be made to Queen of Peace School, 4508 Vistula Rd., Mishawaka, IN; or Harbor Light Hospice, 1608 E. Day Rd., Mishawaka, IN.

A memorial Mass will be held Tuesday, May 3, 2016, at 10:30 am, with visitation held an hour prior at Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Mishawaka; Father John Eze will preside. Following the Mass there will a luncheon held at the church. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 pm Tuesday at the Skwiercz family plot at St. Joseph Cemetery in South Bend, where military honors will be rendered.
